NEW YORK (CBS) ―One maverick fertility expert claims to have implanted human clones in women. The sensational claim raises countless ethical and legal issues, and moreover the doctor offers little if any scientific proof of his research
Controversial American fertility Dr. Panayiotis Zavos said, “I can clone a human being.” It’s a claim he’s made before, five years ago, when he told a news conference he implanted a cloned human embryo into an unnamed woman.
The embryo should have produced a replica of her husband.
There was no evidence, and few details. “I did not want to give any specifics for a reason,” Zavos said.
It’s a claim that raises concern amongst ethicists.
“We have had so many scientific discoveries in other avenues we do not need to resort to cloning and there have never been any positive cures or developments from cloning,” said bioethics expert Jennifer Miller.
“In this case human cloning exposes the child to a lot of risks, genetic abnormalities, death from lack of implantation and when we clone animals we have death upon birth, it’s very risky,” Miller said.
Dr. Zavos claims to have transplanted eleven cloned embryos into the wombs of four women.
None resulted in a pregnancy.
His critics said he’s again seeking publicity, walking a minefield of ethics and laws.
“Cloning in general is not a negative technique. It’s just you need to watch it and what direction you take that technique,” Miller said.
